It's Queensland Road Safety Week! 🚗 Now is a It's Queensland Road Safety Week! 🚗

Now is a great time to remind our children (and ourselves) about staying safe around roads. Whether it’s buckling up every trip, making sure car seats are installed correctly, wearing helmets when riding scooters or bikes, or remembering to stop, look, listen, and think before crossing the road, every small habit makes a big difference.

Single-use plastic straws were banned in Qld in 20 Single-use plastic straws were banned in Qld in 2021. But did you know it was a grade 4 schoolgirl who led the movement back in 2017? Molly Steer was just 9 when she watched the documentary, A Plastic Ocean, with her mum. "I’ve always loved turtles. They get straws stuck up their nose and swallow plastic bags and die. It made me realise I need to do something," Molly said.

Her first step was to stop using plastic straws herself, before convincing friends at school and her tuckshop to do the same. From there, Molly's Straw No More campaign was born, beginning with local schools that shared concerns about the health of the Great Barrier Reef.

A year later in 2018, Molly’s campaign had spread to local government, with the Cairns Regional Council unanimously agreeing to remove straws and other single-use plastics, and three years later, BOOM! All of QLD was on board! Proof that little people can make big things happen!

Earth science isn’t just about global research and data – it can start small, and still make giant waves of change. Check out Molly’s TEDx talk with your budding earth scientist: https://loom.ly/arQrIMQ
It’s come a long way since Big Ted and Jemima, a It’s come a long way since Big Ted and Jemima, and if you haven’t yet checked out Playschool’s Science Time on ABC iView, it’s well worth a visit. With three seasons of hands-on experiments that use readily available materials, children can work with an adult (or even older sibling in many cases) to explore chemistry through foams and slimes, physics through rockets and balloon hovercraft, weather concepts, and more. The eggshell geodes were a big hit in our crystal-loving house!

Perfect for Science Week, and any week! https://iview.abc.net.au/show/play-school-science-time
Did you know that Australians invented the dual fl Did you know that Australians invented the dual flush toilet, the black box flight recorder, and that an Aussie team, building on earlier work by Hedy Lamarr, is responsible for wi-fi? What about cochlear implants, or spray-on skin for burn victims? Or that Australians Steven Ma and Neil Gordon, alongside two Danish brothers, founded the start-up business, which was later bought by Google and rebranded as Google Maps?

David Unaipon, the face of our $50 note and a Ngarrindjeri man, applied the concept of boomerang aerodynamics to conceive a vertical-lift flying machine, two decades before the first successful helicopter! He proposed that two boomerangs working together could create a vertical lifting force, but was unable to further the concept, or 18 other provisional patents, due to a lack of funding.

And while Alexander Fleming made the accidental discovery of penicillin in 1928, it was Australian Howard Florey’s team who developed this into a medically useful drug in the 1940s, creating the world’s first antibiotic.

Inventing is essential for progression, and it’s also a huge part of childhood! What did YOU want to invent as a child?

We are a not for-profit organisation providing high quality childcare and Kindergarten programs, with a strong heritage in early childhood education in Queensland and Australia.

The Brisbane Lady Gowrie Childcare Centre was established in 1940 as a demonstration centre for excellence in early childhood education and care. We continue to be Qld’s leading provider of Community Kindergarten and Long Day Care services and uphold the highest standards in childcare.

Lady Gowrie QLD acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which our Kindergarten and childcare services are placed, and pay our respects to the elders, past and present, who have raised children, taught them about the world around them and bestowed on them the gift of culture and language.
