Waiting can be hard – even for adults. Waiting f Waiting can be hard – even for adults. Waiting for your turn to talk when you’ve got something REALLY important to tell someone is especially tricky, but an important skill to learn. Encouraging children to hold your hand while they wait to talk allows them to connect with you immediately, through touch. You can gently rub or squeeze their hand to acknowledge their patience, providing sensory feedback. Thanking them afterwards will help validate their effort, and show them you recognise how hard waiting can be!
When we recognise a child’s unique strengths and When we recognise a child’s unique strengths and build trust through consistent, respectful and responsive interactions, children feel heard and valued. When educators take the time to genuinely connect with each child, showing empathy and understanding, it creates a safe space where children feel comfortable to express themselves and grow both academically and emotionally.

This was the key takeaway from Kelly Oldfield's enlightening session on Building Strong & Authentic Relationships With Children at the Bribie Island Mini Conference last weekend.

Kelly reminded us that relationships are the foundation of all learning in early childhood. Her session encouraged us to slow down, tune in, and truly see the child in front of us. Not just their behaviours, but the emotions, needs, and stories behind them.
Winter has arrived, and a good way add variety to Winter has arrived, and a good way add variety to meals, while also saving at the check-out, is to buy what’s in season. We all know citrus is bursting with Vitamin C to help strengthen immunity, but did you know that pears are a great way to keep digestion systems regular? They’re packed with fibre, and also contain sorbitol, a natural, gentle laxative! They travel well as a whole fruit, and are just as delicious raw as they are softly poached as a warm dessert, or baked into a cake or crumble for a cheeky afternoon treat.

Thinking about ECEC in this way is not about sitting back and disengaging from what is happening but about being able to make choices about what to focus on and what is seen as of value.' Clark and Bockman 2025

Over the weekend, we had the pleasure of listening to the inspiring speaker, Catherine Hydon, discuss slow pedagogy in early childhood education at our Bribie Island Mini Conference. During this session, we explored the principles of slow pedagogy and how to apply them in context, and the key ideas that shape our everyday practice.

The session was incredibly eye-opening and reminded us of the value in pausing, observing, and truly listening. Not just to children, but to ourselves and those around us.

We are a not for-profit organisation providing high quality childcare and Kindergarten programs, with a strong heritage in early childhood education in Queensland and Australia.

The Brisbane Lady Gowrie Childcare Centre was established in 1940 as a demonstration centre for excellence in early childhood education and care. We continue to be Qld’s leading provider of Community Kindergarten and Long Day Care services and uphold the highest standards in childcare.

Lady Gowrie QLD acknowledges the traditional custodians of the lands on which our Kindergarten and childcare services are placed, and pay our respects to the elders, past and present, who have raised children, taught them about the world around them and bestowed on them the gift of culture and language.
