Free Kindy in QLD
- All Lady Gowrie centres offer free kindergarten under the Queensland Government’s Free Kindy program.
- As part of the Queensland Government’s push for affordable access to quality early childhood education. Every child in their pre-prep year will get 600 hours of free kindy from 2024.
Lady Gowrie Queensland’s CEO Louise Jackson knows many new parents are confused about the exact timing to send their children to Kindy, and when to enrol them.
“We see families unsure and confused about what is the right year for their children to start kindy, as it has changed from previous years and possibly their older children,” she said.
“Your child must be at least 4 years of age by 30 June, if they want to start kindy in that year.
If your child is born between 1 July 2020 until 30 June 2021 then you can enrol for the 2025 year.”
Lady Gowrie has kicked off Enrolments for Kindy in 2025 to ensure that the message gets out to the community so they get their children enrolled and know for sure, which year their children can start kindy and when they need to enrol.
Lady Gowrie is one of the oldest and most respected names in early childhood education in Queensland and Australia.
“We have over 110 Lady Gowrie Affiliated Community Kindergartens across Queensland providing services to more than 6000 families and children statewide,” she said.
Louise explains that you can put your name on a waiting list before the children are old enough to attend, and for some services you need to enrol as early as possible due to demand.
“There is a handy kindy calculator on the Early Years count website which gives you a clear indication of what year your child needs to be enrolled in Kindy, Prep and then Year 1.
“We are here to help parents navigate what is right for their child and their family.”

When should my child start kindy in Queensland?
To attend kindy in 2025, your child was born between 1 July 2020 and 30 June 2021.
To attend kindy in 2026, your child was born between 1 July 2021 and 30 June 2022.
To attend kindy in 2027, your child was born between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2023.
To attend kindy in 2028, your child was born between 1 July 2023 and 30 June 2024.
To attend kindy in 2029, your child was born between 1 July 2024 and 30 June 2025.
